The year was 1985 - the year I turned nine years old, my baby sister was born, and my mom was able to put a down payment on a house. It was also the year I became acutely aware of my intuitive gifts, thanks to our house being haunted!
I was always a strange child, even before the age of nine. I picked up on things that most kids wouldn’t normally notice, I had a plethora of “imaginary” friends (I had trouble making actual friends), and an uncanny knack for knowing things most kids my age wouldn’t or shouldn’t know. There were a few adults that noticed I was different, but they never really said anything to me. I do think they had some conversations with my mom, but she just brushed it off. For the most part, however, most adults just thought of me as a strange child that had difficulty socializing. This was true, but it didn’t really bothered me until we moved into our new house.
Moving into our new home was exciting. My younger sister and I we were happy that we wouldn’t have to share a room anymore (that turned out not to be true), we didn’t have to worry about downstairs neighbors, and we’d be able to have more than one cat. However, this excitement quickly changed for me. Shortly after moving in, I began to see, hear and feeling things nobody else was. While this was normal for me, these experiences were different. They were scary.
I had feelings of considerable dread. There were times I felt like I was being watched and followed around in the house, even when no one was there. There were even times when it felt like someone was touching me, when nobody was physically present in the room with me. There were certain rooms in the house that just felt different from the rest of the house. There were even rooms I didn’t want enter, especially in the basement. The basement was terrifying, especially the laundry room and storage room areas. I hated the basement, and I hated the fact that that’s where my sister’s and my room was located. I tried expressing these feelings, emotions and overall strange occurrences to my mom, only to be dismissed and invalidated. This quicky reinforced that I was on my own when processing this information.
Over the years I learned a lot about navigating the energies of the house, the people living in it and myself. I learned how the emotions and feelings of others influenced an entire room (sometimes the whole house), which rooms felt safe and which rooms needed to be avoided, which voices sounded trustworthy and which shouldn’t be trusted. All this information was overwhelming. However, this information and lessons helped me navigate everyday life outside of the house as well. I’d intuitively know which teachers, classmates, co-workers and customers to trust or avoid by what information I was tuning into. Sometimes I’d be given internal verbal warnings; I’d see things in my mind that I couldn’t explain but knew applied to the person or people directly; I’d tune-in into how a particular person was feeling and know whether to console them or just let them be. I’d figure out instinctively who to approach or avoid by the way the energy shifted when they entered a room. I had no logical explanation for any of this.
It would be decades before I’d learn that I house I grew up in, the house that sometimes scared me, was actually teaching me how to instinctively use my intuition and tap into all the clairs. Growing up in a haunted house was both a curse and blessing that has helped me discover and embrace the Medium I’ve become.
